Infographic of the Day: Just as they did in 2008 and 2009, Gallup spent each day last year phoning up 1,000 random people from across the country to ask them how they’re doing (among other, more specific questions about good and bad habits).
The survey results were compiled into the 2010 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index Map, which breaks down America’s quality of life by district. Click here to get interactive with the inforgraphic.
According to the Index, America’s happiest person would be “a tall, Asian-American, observant Jew who is at least 65 and married, has children, lives in Hawaii, runs his own business and has a household income of more than $120,000 a year.”
Bonus: The New York Times found him.

Viewing the interactive map on this thing was fascinating. I find it odd, however, that Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota seem to be owning everything. Seriously- what is even in those states? Dont they have the highest rate of drug use? Maybe they are just happy because they are stoned.
Also, the midwest and northeast, including NYC and Chicago, report much higher levels of feeling safe walking alone at night than the entire southeast. I’m chalking that up to paranoia— there is no way that walking alone at 4 am in Chicago is safer than walking alone at 4 am in Cary, NC. But then again - theres a lot of people out and about at 4 am in Chicago, whereas everyone goes to bed before 10 pm in Cary and bars close at 2 (at the latest- puritans!)- so maybe only the weirdos are out at that time.
